Austrian Vignette Services & Selection Guide

A comprehensive overview of all Austrian motorway vignette options, eligibility rules, and our decision-support tools to help you choose the right product for your journey.

Overview of the Austrian Vignette System

Austria's motorway toll system is based on a time-limited vignette (German: Vignette or Autobahnpickerl). All motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes GVW must display a valid vignette when using motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. The system covers approximately 2,200 kilometres of motorway and expressway network across all nine Austrian federal states.

The vignette system was introduced in Austria in 1997 and has been continuously modernised. Since 2018, a fully digital vignette (registered to the vehicle's licence plate) has been available as an alternative to the traditional adhesive sticker. Both formats are legally equivalent and enforced through a combination of police patrols and ASFINAG's automated licence plate recognition system (TOLL2GO).

Important: The vignette is a flat-rate time-based toll. It does not cover special toll sections (Sondermautstrecken), which include certain tunnels, mountain passes, and the Brenner motorway. These require separate payment at toll booths or via pre-registration.

Vignette Types

ASFINAG offers three standard vignette durations for passenger cars and motorcycles, and a separate annual vignette for light commercial vehicles (3.5–7.5 tonnes). Each type is available in both digital and sticker format.

Vehicle Categories

The vignette obligation and pricing depend on the vehicle category. The following categories apply under Austrian law:

Category A — Motorcycles
All two-wheeled motor vehicles, including mopeds with engine capacity above 50cc. Reduced vignette prices apply. Motorcycle vignettes are not interchangeable with car vignettes.
Category B — Passenger Cars and Light Vehicles (<3.5t GVW)
Includes all passenger cars, SUVs, campervans, and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. Standard vignette prices apply. Vehicles with trailers use the car vignette (the trailer does not require a separate vignette).
Category C — Light Commercial Vehicles (3.5–7.5t GVW)
Only the annual vignette is available for this category. A higher price applies. Vehicles in this category may also be subject to GO-BOX requirements on certain sections.
Category D — Heavy Vehicles (>7.5t GVW)
Not subject to the vignette system. Instead, these vehicles must use the GO-BOX electronic toll system, which charges per kilometre driven on the motorway network.

Special Toll Sections

In addition to the vignette, certain sections of the Austrian motorway network require separate toll payment. These are known as Sondermautstrecken (special toll sections). Driving on these sections without paying the additional toll is a separate offence from the vignette violation.

Digital Vignette Service

The digital vignette (German: digitale Vignette) is registered to the vehicle's licence plate in the ASFINAG database. No physical sticker is required. The system is verified automatically by cameras at motorway entry points and by police using mobile plate readers.

Key operational details of the digital vignette service:

  • Purchase exclusively online at shop.asfinag.at or authorised resellers
  • Licence plate must be entered exactly as on the vehicle registration document (including country prefix for foreign plates)
  • Start date can be set up to 18 days in advance; vignette activates at 00:00 on the start date
  • Confirmation sent by email; no physical delivery
  • Corrections to licence plate errors must be made before the vignette becomes active; contact ASFINAG customer service
  • Not transferable to another vehicle under any circumstances
  • Refunds are not available once the vignette is active
For Rental Cars: If you purchase a digital vignette for a rental car, ensure the plate number matches exactly. When returning the car, the vignette remains registered to that plate — it cannot be transferred to your next rental.

Assessment Factors for Vignette Selection

The following factors should be considered when selecting the appropriate vignette for your situation:

#FactorImpact on Choice
1Trip durationPrimary factor; determines minimum vignette type
2Vehicle typeDetermines applicable vignette category and price
3Travel frequencyMultiple trips per year may justify annual vignette
4Rental vs. own vehicleRental cars may already have vignette; always check
5Route (special toll sections)Budget for additional tolls if route includes special sections
6Purchase timingDigital vignette can be purchased up to 18 days in advance
7Preferred formatDigital (no sticker) vs. sticker (physical proof)
8Vehicle registration countryForeign plates accepted; enter exactly as on registration document
9Trailer or caravanTrailer does not require separate vignette; car vignette covers it
10Budget constraints10-day is cheapest; annual is most economical for frequent use

Exceptions and Exemptions

Certain vehicles and situations are exempt from the vignette requirement under Austrian law. The following exemptions apply:

  • Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, fire brigade) — statutory exemption
  • Military vehicles on official duty
  • Vehicles with diplomatic immunity under international law
  • Vehicles over 7.5t GVW — subject to GO-BOX system instead
  • Agricultural and forestry vehicles used exclusively for agricultural purposes
  • Vehicles temporarily exempt under special ASFINAG dispensation (e.g., during declared emergencies)
  • Vehicles using only non-vignette roads (B and L roads) — no vignette required
  • Pedestrians, cyclists, and non-motorised vehicles — not applicable

Exemptions must be verifiable upon request. Claiming an exemption without valid grounds is treated as a vignette violation.
